When a renovation calls for opening a wall, extending a kitchen, or removing a load-bearing column to create the open-concept living space so many homeowners want, steel beams often become the backbone of the project. These beams carry the weight that a wall or post used to support, and getting them into place is one of the most technical and closely managed parts of any remodel. It is not simply a matter of lifting a heavy piece of metal into a gap. It is a coordinated process that blends structural engineering, careful planning, and specialized rigging equipment to ensure everything ends up exactly where it needs to be, safely and permanently.

Why Steel Beams Require Special Handling

A steel I-beam or LVL flitch beam used in home construction can weigh anywhere from a few hundred pounds to well over a thousand, depending on its length and gauge. Unlike drywall or lumber, a crew of workers cannot simply muscle steel into position. Steel concentrates significant weight, remains rigid, and leaves very little room for error. If a beam shifts unexpectedly while workers maneuver it into a wall cavity, it can damage the surrounding framing, injure workers, or fail to seat properly on its support columns. That is why licensed contractors treat beam installation as a distinct phase of a renovation, often bringing in a structural engineer to confirm the beam size and bearing points before any lifting begins.

Temporary Support Comes First

Before a single beam moves an inch, the existing structure requires temporary shoring. Adjustable steel jacks or timber posts are placed at set intervals to carry the load the wall or column currently supports. This step is not optional. Removing a bearing wall without proper shoring can cause immediate sagging or, in worse cases, a partial collapse. Once the shoring is confirmed level and properly braced, the crew can begin removing the old wall section and preparing the opening for the new beam.

Rigging the Beam Into Place

This is where rigging tools become essential. Depending on the size of the job, crews may use a combination of chain hoists, rigging slings, and shackles to lift and guide the beam through tight interior spaces. A chain hoist mounted to a temporary beam or a ceiling anchor allows workers to raise the steel slowly and with full control, inching it upward without the sudden jolts that a manual lift might cause. Nylon or wire rope slings wrapped around the beam distribute the load evenly and prevent damage to the metal edges during the lift.

For larger renovations, especially when a beam must pass through a doorway or around a corner before reaching its final position, a come-along or hand-operated winch gives the crew fine control over horizontal positioning. Tag lines, simple ropes attached to either end of the beam, let workers steady and steer the load from a safe distance rather than standing directly underneath it. On projects where the beam is brought in from outside through a window opening or a section of removed siding, a small mobile crane or a spreader bar setup may be used to keep the load balanced as it is threaded into the structure.

Setting the Beam and Transferring the Load

Once the crew aligns the beam over its bearing points, typically a new steel column, an existing foundation wall, or reinforced framing, they slowly lower it into place using the same hoisting equipment. They may use shims to create a perfectly level seat before they bolt, weld, or fasten the beam according to the engineer’s specifications. After securing all the connections, the crew begins removing the temporary shoring, allowing the new beam to gradually accept the load. They transfer the load in stages rather than all at once so they can detect any settling or unexpected movement early.

Why This Is Not a DIY Project

Structural risks, heavy rigging equipment, and building code requirements make steel beam installation a renovation task that licensed professionals should always handle. Most municipalities require permits, engineering reviews, and inspection sign-offs as standard parts of the process, and they do so for good reason. When professionals rig, lift, and seat a beam correctly, it can support a home for generations. However, rushing the installation or relying on improvised methods can compromise the safety of the entire structure.
